MISSION STATEMENT

The North Providence Fire Department is committed to providing the highest level of Public Safety services to our community. We protect lives and property through Fire Suppression, Advanced Life Support Emergency Medical Services, Technical Rescue, Fire Prevention and Public Education. We will take pride in our service and work safely, professionally and courteously. We provide challenging and continuing training and education that is current and effective, enabling the department to accomplish its mission. Our goals and objectives are to operate in compliance with all NFPA Standards as well as the internationally recognized best practices of a progressive and professional fire and rescue department.

Class 1 Fire Department

The North Providence Fire Department has been upgraded to a Class 1 Fire Department by the ISO (Insurance Services Office) effective November 1, 2014. This is the highest fire suppression rating possible. There are only 63 Class 1 departments nationwide, 6 in New England and 1 in Rhode Island.

ISO collects and evaluates information from communities in the United States on their structure fire suppression capabilities. The data is analyzed using a Fire Suppression Rating Schedule. Then, a Public Protection Classification number is given to the community from 1 to 10. A Class 1 represents an exemplary fire suppression program. A Class 10 indicates that the area’s fire suppression program does not meet ISO’s minimum criteria.

A community’s PPC depends on the overall operations of the Fire Department including equipment, staffing, training, geographic distribution of fire companies, operational considerations and community risk reduction. The review also analyzes the water supply system and the emergency communications systems.

This exemplary rating plays an important role in the underwriting process at insurance companies. Not only should our residents and business owners feel a sense of pride and security, they may also see potential savings when evaluating insurance rates.

Over the past few years, the department has undergone a reorganization process. We have focused on updating our apparatus, equipment, policies and procedures. We have concentrated heavily on firefighter safety and training. We pride ourselves on making all of our decisions and plans based upon internationally recognized best practices for the fire service; and, in line with the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) Standards.
