MONTCLAIR FIRE DEPARTMENT

COMING SOON: PROBATIONARY FIREFIGHTER

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Be at least 18 years of age, and must be hired before your 35^th birthday;
• Be a citizen of the United States;
• Be a resident of New Jersey;
• Possess a valid, unrestricted New Jersey driver’s license;
• Possess a high school diploma or GED;
• Pass all physical testing;
• Pass all medical exams, including psychological and drug testing;
• Complete and pass an interview panel;
• Pass a comprehensive background check;
• Be of good moral character and have a clean criminal history;

• After being potentially hired as a recruit, successfully graduate from the assigned Fire Academy;
• After graduating from the Fire Academy complete a year as a Probationary Firefighter.

Physical Agility Entrance Tests

This test will be administered by a New Jersey Police Training Commission Certified Physical Training Instructor. All tests are scored on a pass\fail format and a Fire candidate must successfully complete all eight (8) components of the prescribed pre-admission physical fitness test. Any failure will result in the candidate’s ineligibility for admittance into the Fire Academy, and will automatically eliminate the candidate from the selection process. The test is not gender specific. The events and minimum scores to pass are:

• 1.5 mile run in 15:55 or less
• 300 meter run in 70.1 seconds or less
• Vertical jump of 15 inches or more
• 24 push-ups in 1 minute or less
• 28 sit-ups in 1 minute or less
• 105' aerial ladder climb, no hesitation or stopping, in 5 minutes or less
• 175 pound dummy drag 50' wearing a 40 lb vest in 18 seconds or less
• 3 story stair climb (up and down) wearing a 40 lb vest and carrying 100' of hose in 1 minute or less

Applications will be accepted from March 19th through March 23rd, 2019.  The Township of Montclair reserves the right to limit the number of candidates invited to continue the selection process after the applications are reviewed, as well as during subsequent testing.

A preference will be given to Montclair residents.
