FIREFIGHTER / EMT / PARAMEDIC

The West Haven Fire Department will be conducting an Entry Exam on Saturday December 16, 2017 at 9:00am at West Haven High School 1 Circle St West Haven, CT. 06516.       

This exam will be for entry level Firefighter Paramedic/EMT. This is a Fire Police Selection Inc. (FPSI) exam. The fee for this application is $65 (Exam Fee $45 + FirefighterApp.com Fee $20 = $65.00) and shall be submitted on line with the application and certification documents. This fee is non-refundable.  Application documents and fee must be submitted through FirefighterApp.com.  Application deadline is December 1, 2017.

ABOUT OUR DEPARTMENT

The West Haven Fire Department is a progressive Class II Department providing fire suppression, fire rescue, hazardous materials intervention/protection, emergency medical care and mutual aid, responding to more than 6500 calls per year. The WHFD/ Center District has four twelve-person platoons, which rotate four 24/72 hour shifts.  The department offers a competitive salary/benefit package including subsidized health and dental benefits, annual health and fitness program and a retirement plan. Under the terms of the Union Contract. 

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

 Performs firefighting work of ordinary difficulty and assumes responsibility in the prevention, combating, confining, and extinguishing of fires. The candidate shall perform the delivery of Emergency Medical Services. Perform search and rescue work; protect exposures; overhaul; ventilates and does salvage work as it relates to the fire service. Makes inspections of buildings as it relates to pre planning; must be certified in the use and wearing of self-contained breathing apparatus; capable of performing all requirements of NFPA 1001; and able to function at the Hazmat Operational Level. Operates fire department equipment and pumps; responds to emergencies; drives various types of apparatus; performs hose and ladder work; attends classes and evolutions as they relate to the fire service; performs fire prevention and public fire education work; maintains apparatus and stations in a clean, orderly fashion by performing normal maintenance, doing building repairs, and painting as ordered to keep buildings and equipment in good repair; performs lifesaving and life sustaining techniques and victim extrication for the general public as emergencies may demand; does house watch duty; does related work as required; works a rotating shift including days, nights, Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays. Perform duties in a paramilitary style work environment including discipline of character with-in the chain command of a hierarchy based organization.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: 

The candidate shall work under the direct supervision of an officer or other designated superior. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Diploma or State of Connecticut Certified Equivalency or Equal to G.E.D. from another State.
  • State of Connecticut & National Registry Emergency Medical Technician Certification (date of hire)
  • State of Connecticut & National Registry Paramedic Certification. (date of hire)
  • National Paramedic/EMT Registry for out of state candidates. (date of hire)
  • Copy of a Valid Driver's License.
  • DD 214 (if claiming Veteran points)
  • Must be eighteen years of age by date of exam.

Knowledge, skill and ability:

Possess good social skills and general intelligence; ability to follow oral and written instructions; ability to learn fire prevention and firefighting procedures; ability to comprehend fire prevention codes and ordinances. Ability to think quickly and effectively in emergencies; good mechanical aptitude; mental alertness; must be able to learn to drive trucks in the 10,000 to 60,000 pound range and obtain a Class 2(Q), State of Connecticut operator’s license, before completion of probationary period; following satisfactory completion and graduation from the fire training school the date of the probationary period will be established by the department. All employees must maintain a Paramedic, EMT Certification and local Medical Control for the period of time designated by the WHFD and local Medical Control. No appointment to the position of fire fighter shall be deemed final and permanent until after expiration of one year of successful probationary service.

CHARACTER REQUIREMENTS:

In addition to the checking of references and facts in the application, a thorough character investigation of each candidate will be made before the names are certified for appointment. Candidates who do not have a good character rating or persons who have a felony criminal record or who have been dishonorably discharged from any police department, fire department, or armed forces are ineligible. 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Applicants must have reached their eighteenth (18) birthday by the date of exam; good physical condition with weight in proportion to height to include a physical fitness profile that meets the following.  

  1. Applicants shall meet the Wellness Standards as per the Union Contract. (Re-test may be required prior to hire date)

  5. Applicants will submit to a medical exam, the scope and contents to be determined by the West Haven Fire Department, immediately before appointment.

POINTS FOR CANDIDATES:

Points for candidates shall be awarded in the following manner, provided the candidate achieves a passing grade on both the FPSI National Firefighter Select Written and Oral Exam.

West Haven Fire Department Center District Volunteer Firefighters must be in good standing for one year prior to the date of written exam. National Registry Paramedic candidates shall receive points based on their paramedic certification and firefighting certification if applicable. National Registry EMT's candidates shall receive points based on their EMT certification and firefighting certification if applicable.  A candidate may request to have points awarded upon successful certification of National Registry Paramedic, National Registry EMT and or CT Recruit Firefighter to the Board of Fire Commissioners prior to the expiration of the hiring list. The hiring list will expire two (2) years from the date of certification.

Total points claimed shall not exceed 15pts. Exam scoring with points shall not exceed 100pts.
