NORWALK FIRE DEPARTMENT

Written Exam to be held on Saturday, January 13, 2024 and Sunday, January 14, 2024. The Norwalk Fire Department reserves the right to add additional testing dates if required, once the application process has been closed.

There will be no make-up exams. It is your responsibility to ensure you can attend the examination.

Example of Duties:

A firefighter must be able to work within a team and maintain effective working relationships with peers and supervisors. A firefighter shall perform scheduled routine maintenance tasks. These include but are not limited to the care and maintenance of fire apparatus, self-contained breathing apparatus, hand and power tools, hose and associated appliances, emergency life support equipment, and any other equipment assigned. The firefighter shall maintain fire department buildings and grounds in the prescribed manner. A firefighter must be able to perform firefighting tasks per NFPA Standard 1001, Firefighter Professional Qualifications. Tasks are performed under extreme conditions such as hostile environments, weather and temperature extremes, cramped surroundings, limited visibility, and physical and mental stress. The firefighter’s responsibility lies in protecting life and property while under the supervision of their officers. The firefighter will be involved in pre-fire planning, fire prevention, and public education. The firefighter must be capable of dealing with the general public courteously and professionally.

 

Supervised By:

Works under the supervision of a Lieutenant, Captain, or Deputy Chief. Work is reviewed for technical proficiency and effectiveness.

 

SALARY:

Hourly

$32.07 – $41.96

Annually

$70,229 - $91,896

Salary is based on the 2024 pay scale. Newly appointed firefighters reach the top step in six years.

 

ABOUT THE CITY OF NORWALK:

The City of Norwalk, located along Long Island Sound, has a population of nearly 93,000 people, making it the sixth largest city in Connecticut. Situated in the heart of Fairfield County, approximately 30 miles northeast of New York City, Norwalk is home to 12 elementary schools, four middle schools, three high schools, one community college, one hospital, more than 100 places of worship, and over 1,000 businesses. Norwalk Harbor is one of the most important centers of recreational boating, commercial shell-fishing, and other water-dependent activities in western Long Island Sound. Water-dependent facilities include 15 marinas, 13 private clubs with boating facilities, five commercial port facilities, over 1,800 berthing spaces, and over 500 harbor mooring locations. In all, Norwalk is home to roughly 35 miles of shoreline.

 

ABOUT NORWALK FIRE DEPARTMENT:

The Norwalk Fire Department is a career department consisting of 133 line firefighters and officers deployed into four shifts and staffing five stations. Frontline apparatus consists of five engines, two ladder trucks, one heavy rescue, and a command car. We also provide marine fire and rescue capabilities through the use of two fire boats. The Department contains 14 staff personnel consisting of the Fire Marshal’s Office, Training Division, Apparatus Maintenance, Emergency Management, the Fire Chief, and two Assistant Fire Chiefs, respectively. The Norwalk Fire Department is called upon by its residents and neighbors for fire emergencies, emergency medical services, Hazmat response, Rapid Intervention Teams, confined space rescue, trench rescue, collapse rescue, and vehicle rescue/extrication. The Norwalk Fire Department averages nearly 9,000 incidents annually.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Permanent work status
  • High school diploma or equivalency certificate
  • Valid motor vehicle operator’s license by the time of appointment
  • Excellent physical and mental health
  • Provide a valid (not older than 18 months) Candidates Physical Agility Test (CPAT) card at the time of conditional job offer.

 

REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Ability to learn firefighting methods and techniques, the operation of firefighting equipment, the city's physical layout, and significant traffic and fire hazards. Ability to think and act quickly in emergencies. Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions promptly and accurately. Ability to deal courteously and effectively with the general public. New Firefighters are required to become a certified Connecticut EMT or EMR within one year of appointment.

  11. Fourteen-week residential CT Firefighter Academy Recruit Program
  12. Note: CERTIFIED LATERALS who have previously graduated from a professional Recruit Program WILL need to follow the HIRING PROCESS listed above but WILL NOT attend the CT Fire Academy. Proof of graduation will be required.
