Firefighter/EMT Eligibility List Announcement
East Whiteland Township is seeking to develop an eligibility list of qualified candidates for future openings for Full-Time Firefighter/EMT and Part-Time Firefighter/EMT positions. The list of eligible candidates who meet the qualifications of the position and pass the physical and written testing held on October 18, 2025 (inclement weather date October 19, 2025) will be valid for two (2) years from the testing date. Once a position, Full-Time or Part-Time, becomes available, the candidates with the top 5 scores on the list will be contacted and interviewed.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Provides fire/rescue and EMS protection; performs suppression, rescue, ventilation, salvage and overhaul duties; positions apparatus, operate pumps, generators, sets and controls water pressures, assures ample water supply; serves as EMT, Vehicle Rescue Technician or Hazardous Material Operation Technician; serves as driver on Fire/Rescue/EMS apparatus.
- Performs routine maintenance on apparatus; including but not limited to checking emergency warning devices, fluid levels, tire pressure, changes oil, lubricates valves and levers on pumps, maintains generator, lights, cooling systems; cleans, wipes and waxes; conducts operations check on Hurst tools; reports apparatus and equipment problems to the appropriate company officer.
- Performs routine maintenance and operational checks but not limited to fire/rescue hazardous materials operations & EMS equipment, i.e. SCBA, cascades, hoses, nozzles, hose appliances, forcible entry, overhaul, ventilation, meters, suits, rescue equipment and basic life support equipment.
- Performs cleaning maintenance tasks on building and grounds and reports any building and property problems
- Performs daily inventory of medical supplies on ambulance and weekly inventory of equipment on fire apparatus.
- Performs general duties associated with normal operations of the fire department, e.g. errands, vehicle delivery, pick up for/from inspections and maintenance, etc.
- Inspects Township properties for compliance with codes and ordinances as required and as time permits.
- Conducts Fire Prevention Activities; obtains updated information from businesses and preplan documents; checks and tests fire/smoke alarms and sprinkler systems, local sprinkler, and hydrant locations; locates hazardous materials; checks for clearance of emergency exits; creates maps and indexes.
- Attends and participates in fire company training sessions.
- Prepares and maintains reports and records of activities, incidents, inspections, and other required information. Utilizes computer software such as Microsoft Office, and Incident Reporting Software.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Special Requirements
- Must be at least 21 years of age at time of application.
- Preferred requirement: valid Pennsylvania Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class B with tank and air brake endorsement.
- Must pass required background checks and physical including but not limited to; PA Department of Human
- Services Child Abuse Clearance, PA State Police Criminal Background Check, Federal Criminal History
- Record Information and submit a PA Driver Record History.
Education, Training, and Qualifications
This position must maintain the following at minimum throughout employment as well as additional education/ training/ certification/ licensure required by the Department Head.
- High school diploma or GED
- 3 years firefighting experience
- 2 years’ experience as an EMT or Paramedic
- 2 years’ experience driving and operating a fire department pumper.
- Certificate of completion in CPR-AED, Pump Operations 1 and 2, Emergency Vehicle Operators course, Basic Firefighting, Structural Firefighting, Engine Company Operations, Hazardous Materials Operations Class, Vehicle Rescue Technician, NIMS 100, 200, 700 and 800.
- Certification as a Pa Department of Health EMT or Paramedic
- Certification through the Pa State Fire Academy or IFSAC or Pro-board in all the following areas:
- Firefighter 2 (NFPA 1001)
- PA DOH Vehicle Rescue or Vehicle and Machinery Rescue (NFPA 1006)
Preferred Education / Training & Qualifications
- Driver Operator Pumper (NFPA 1002)
- Driver Operator Mobile Water Supply (NFPA 1002)
- Hazardous Materials Operations (NFPA 472)
- Truck Company Operations 1
- Advanced or Special Vehicle Rescue Training
- Fire Instructor 1 (NFPA 1041)
- Fire Inspector (NFPA 1031)
- Mid Rise to High Rise Firefighting
Recruitment Process: Each appointment to the fire department shall be made only according to qualifications and fitness, to be ascertained by competitive examinations. Said examinations shall be given at such time(s) as the Township shall determine. The full Job Description will be provided to candidates prior to the start of the hiring process.
