Hamden Fire Department Information

Fire fighters carrying a stretcherThe Hamden Fire Department is classified as a combination fire department. We incorporate both career and volunteer members to accomplish our mission. Our career and volunteer members are dedicated to providing our customers with the most comprehensive and professional service possible. In addition to the department's core mission of fire suppression, we have moved forward and become highly proficient as all-hazards responders. 74% of Hamden's 10,000 plus emergency responses were classified as medical.

Our paramedic and Emergency Medical Team (EMT) staff handles these calls. Additionally, our first responders handle all technical rescues, service calls, and hazardous material incidents. Hamden's response times have continuously improved over the past twelve months.

Members

All career and volunteer members participate in extensive training throughout the year. All career members have attended a rigorous training program. This program, administered by the Connecticut. Fire Academy, teaches our Firefighters not only the technical skills necessary for fire suppression and rescue, but also camaraderie and team building skills so necessary in the fire service. Volunteer Firefighters attend the Hamden Fire Department Fire Fighter (FF) I and FF II training program.

Emergency Response System

Our emergency response system is poised for the future. We have successfully implemented a multi-year vehicle replacement plan which ensures safety for our citizens and Firefighters along with substantially decreasing the financial impact to the community.

Working toward improving the community's Insurance Services Organization (ISO) rating will result in competitive fire insurance rates for property owners. We continue to provide our members with new and innovative training equipment and ideas. Seeking and procuring State and Federal grants will assist in our budgetary process.

Community Involvement

Our Fire Department works with the community throughout the year on an aggressive outreach program. Representatives from our fire companies conduct fire safety programs in all the town's elementary schools and pre-K facilities. All educational materials are procured through the Fire Department's budget.

We are excited to be introducing our Tuesday Night Trainings (TNT) as free educational awareness seminars in conjunction with mutual partners. Thanks to the generosity of the Hamden Public Schools, these events will be taking place at the Hamden Middle School Veterans Memorial Auditorium one Tuesday evening per month while school is in session. We will be presenting a multitude of topics in hopes to help prevent emergencies from happening and provide our citizens with the skills necessary to aide in any action.

Our "Vial of Life" program provides residents afflicted with a medical condition with a vial to store their medical information in a common area such as a refrigerator for easy access by fire fighters or police officers called to their homes.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services looks forward to providing continued quality care and service to the citizens of Hamden. Pride, tradition, and professionalism equal our commitment to you and your families.
