Career Firefighter / EMT — Second Hiring Process
Lower Paxton Township Bureau of Fire | Dauphin County, PA
Lower Paxton Township—the 12th largest municipality in Pennsylvania—covers 28 square miles and serves a diverse and growing community of 54,000 residents. As we continue to expand our combination fire service, we are hiring motivated, qualified Career Firefighter/EMTs to provide essential emergency response alongside our dedicated volunteer firefighters.
About the Role
Full-time, operational position responding to fire, EMS, rescue, hazardous materials, and other emergencies; operating and maintaining apparatus and equipment; conducting training and readiness activities; and engaging in public education and community risk reduction. Work includes shift work that involves nights, weekends, holidays, mandatory training, and recall during major incidents or severe weather conditions.
Schedule (Current)
- 06:00 – 18:00 hours, 7-days a week
- Two Shifts operating on the Pittman 2-3-2 schedule
Future Staffing Goal
- Transition to 24-hour staffing
- Four-shift system - 24/72 rotation (24 hours on, 72 hours off)
- Target implementation: By end of 2026
Minimum Qualifications (at time of hire)
- 21 years or older
- Valid Pennsylvania Driver’s License
- High School Diploma or GED
- Pro Board Firefighter II certification
- Pennsylvania EMT–Basic (current)
- Current CPR/AED certification
- Pump Operations 1 & 2 (or equivalent)
- Hazardous Materials—Operations certification
- PA Vehicle Rescue Technician (or equivalent)
- NIMS/ICS 100, 200, 700, 800 certifications
Preferred Qualifications (not required)
- Driver/Operator—Pumper/Aerial, Aerial Operations
- Fire Officer I, Fire Instructor I, or equivalent leadership certifications
- ICS-300/400, Advanced Rapid Intervention and Technical Rescue discipline training
- Prior combination/municipal fire service experience
Compensation & Benefits
- 2026 Starting Salary: $58,298, progressing to $95,045.56 after 5 years of service

Selection Process

- Written Assessment (Score of 70% or higher to pass)
- Panel interview(s)
- CPAT Physical Agility Testing
- Comprehensive Police Background Investigation
- Medical and Psychological Evaluation & Drug Screening (post-offer), and verification of all required credentials.
