Firefighter/EMT, Firefighter/Paramedic

REMINDER: Applications close at midnight this Thursday May 18th.

Testing dates have been announced, these are subject to change although unlikely.

Written test: Wednesday May 31st in the evening. Those that pass and score high enough will move on to the next phase which is the MPAT.

MPAT: You will be assigned one of two days, either Wednesday June 28th, or Thursday June 29th. Test to start sometime late afternoon on those dates. Candidates who pass and score high enough will move on the next phase which is the oral board.

Oral boards: You will be assigned one of two days, either Monday July 10th, or Tuesday July 11th.

Candidates who pass all 3 phases with high enough scores to move on, will have their scores averaged, residency and military points added, and be placed on an eligibility list that will be valid for 2 years.

MINIMIMUM REQUIRMENTS

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or authorized to work in the United States
  • Applicants must have reached their 18th birthday as of the closing date for filing applications
  • Must have a High School Diploma or State Equivalency Certificate
  • Must not use tobacco products
  • Each candidate must possess and retain a current Connecticut Motor Vehicle Operator’s License at the time of appointment.  In addition, if appointed, an individual must obtain a Connecticut Driver’s License with a fire apparatus “Q” endorsement within a time period to be established by the Fire Department.  Failure to obtain and retain this license may be grounds for termination.
  • Applicants must meet the medical requirements of the National Fire Protection Association’s (NFPA) 1582 Standard on Comprehensive Occupational Medical Program for Fire Departments after being examined by a department contracted physician. The examining physician may disqualify any candidate and reject for any cause which is his/her medical opinion.
  • Pass background check performed by outside agency
  • Valid CT EMT license at time of appointment
  • Valid Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) card (within two years) at time of appointment
  • Pass Milford Physical Agility Test (MPAT) 

Pay/Benefits 

  • Starting pay is $1,275 per week up to $1,495 after reaching top step
  • Paramedic bonus of $15,000 if assigned to transport units
  • Paramedic bonus of $13,000 if assigned to Engine/Squad/Quint companies
  • EMT bonus of $4000 if assigned to transport units
  • EMT bonus of $2000 if assigned to Engine/Squad/Quint companies

Job Description/Duties

The Milford Fire Department is accepting applications to establish a firefighter eligibility list. This list will become effective after review and certification by the Board of Fire Commissioners and will be in effect for two years.

This position is represented by the Milford Professional Firefighters IAFF Local 944 Bargaining Unit.

The position of firefighter will be located at one of our fire stations under the general supervision of the Fire Chief. Firefighters will perform as a member of a firefighting team. They will regularly participate in public safety activities, including firefighting, rescue, emergency medical services, ventilation, forcible entry, salvage, fire prevention, and various training sessions to continuously update their skills and knowledge required for effective work performance. Decisions are made with a supervisor's guidance and also on an individual level which have a direct effect on life and property.

42 hour average workweek. Assignments for the first twelve months (once assigned to a platoon) are subject to the discretion of the Chief of the Department.

The Milford Fire Department holds the right to select Connecticut Licensed Paramedics on the eligibility list before EMT level providers if there is a need within the Department.

Residency Points

  • 5 residency points will be awarded to the residents of Milford final score.  Applicants must submit proof of residency in the initial online application.

Military Points

  • 5 military points will be awarded to the applicant's final score. Applicants must submit a copy of their Military Discharge Form DD214 reflecting an honorable discharge, active-duty identification card or guard/reserve military identification card to receive military points.

Extended Time

  • Candidates with a documented learning disability may apply for extended time to take the written examination. Proof of disability must be submitted with the application.

ABOUT OUR DEPARTMENT

The Milford Fire Department is an all-hazards emergency response organization serving the community of Milford. The Department responds to approximately 9,000 calls for service each year with staffing levels of 25 individuals on three engines, two quints, one squad, three ambulances, and one shift commander. In addition, the Department maintains three marine units (two boats and a jet ski) for the water rescues that take place along Milford’s 17 miles of coastline.

It is a job requirement for candidates to have and maintain their Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) status while employed as a Milford firefighter.
