About the Monterey Fire Department

The department operates from a single station, equipped with a ladder truck, engine/tanker, light rescue vehicle, brush truck, and a boat. While a multi-year staffing plan is in progress, the department currently is staffed by a full-time fire chief and deputy fire chief on weekdays, eight resident call/volunteer firefighters, 10 out-of-town night shift firefighters, and four support members. The department also provides mutual aid to nearby communities and serves as the Rapid Intervention Team (RIT) for the towns of Great Barrington, Lee and Sheffield. The department responds to approximately 185 calls annually — a number expected to rise with the implementation of an automatic aid agreement with neighboring towns.

Mission Statement:

To protect lives and property while promoting community safety, through prevention, preparedness and effective emergency response.
