Newport - Firefighter

Job Announcement:

The City of Newport, Rhode Island is accepting applications for the consideration of future appointments to the position of Firefighter with the Newport Fire Department.

SALARY

Firefighter Recruit (RI Fire Academy).......................................................$1,050.00 per week

Probationary Firefighter ...........................................................................$60,554.30 per year

Permanent Firefighter ..............................................................................$66,674.66 - $79,182.52 per year

OFFICIAL APPLICATION PERIOD: Monday, April 28, 2025 until Monday, June 2, 2025

MINIMUM APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS:

• Must be at least 18 years of age but must not have attained the maximum age of 40 by the end of the official Application Period (6/2/2025)
• Must be a High School graduate or possess a General Education Diploma (GED) by June 30, 2025*
• Applicant claiming Veteran’s preference must present a DD-214 separation form
• Must possess a valid driver’s license
• Must be a United States citizen or authorized to work in the United States

A copy of your birth certificate, driver’s license, HS/GED* and DD-214, if applicable, must be submitted at the time of application. Valid PPA and Written Exam test certificates (see below) must also be submitted.

• Applicants must possess, at time of appointment to the Rhode Island Fire Academy, a current National Registry EMT (NREMT) Basic

HIRING PROCESS

• Application: Submit your application through com by or before the application deadline date. Prerequisite: Successful completion of PPA and written examinations will be required by June 2, 2025.
• PPA and Written Tests: The physical performance assessment (PPA) test will be solely administered by the RI Association of Fire Chiefs. Applicants MUST register by the established registration deadline dates at certifyfit.com/ri-fire/. Also, the written examination will be administered by FirefighterApp.com. Applicants MUST register by the established registration deadline date at FirefighterApp.com (select Exams/RI Association of Fire Chiefs for information). Successful completion and issuance of the PPA and written test (score 70%+) certifications must be valid by the application deadline date of June 2, 2025.
• Oral Board Interviews: Pass/Fail - a panel consisting of Fire officials will conduct an initial evaluation of a candidates’ background & experience as it relates to the field of fire science. Only the top 10% of the City’s qualified candidate applicant pool will be initially invited. Others will be retained for future testing within the period defined by the City’s 2-year eligibility
• Background Investigations, Physical, Psychological and Screening for Controlled Substances: Pass/Fail – conducted for candidates selected by the Newport Fire Department who proceed in the

Applicants must pass all phases of the hiring process to qualify for further testing. An applicant who successfully pass all of the examinations will be placed on a 2-year eligibility register for future employment consideration.

* HS/GED proof must be submitted to the Human Resources Department no later than June 30, 2025
