Public Safety Dispatchers perform highly responsible duties that include routine work with both citizens and members of the public safety community.  They handle the reception and dispatch of emergency and routine calls to the Police, Fire and other Town Departments in order to protect life and property for the citizens of the Town of North Kingstown. They must ensure calls are answered and dispatched in a timely and professional manner and operate a variety of computer and radio systems to support public safety operations. Public Safety Dispatchers perform administrative duties required for day to day operations of the Public Safety Dispatch Center and are often tasked with handling confidential and sensitive law enforcement related information and records.


$25.18 per hour

Full time employment with assignment to either days (7:00 AM to 7:00 PM) or nights (7:00 PM to 7:00 AM). Schedule based on a 14-day cycle starting on Tuesday and consisting of 2 working days of 12 hours, followed by 2 days off, followed by 3 working days of 12 hours, followed by 2 days off, followed by 2 working days of 12 hours, followed by 3 days off.


Operate a computer‐aided dispatch system, receive emergency calls from the public requesting Police, Fire, and Medical assistance. Determine the nature and location of an emergency, determine priorities, and dispatch units as necessary and in accordance with established procedures. Receive and process 911 emergency calls. Maintain contact with all units on assignment and maintain status and location of all Police, Fire, and Medical units. Monitor direct emergency alarms. Answer non‐emergency calls for assistance. Enter, update, and retrieve information from a variety of computer systems. Monitor several complex public safety radio frequencies. Assign and coordinate radio channels. Operate a variety of communications equipment, including radio consoles.

Responsible under direction of the Shift Supervisors, for accurately receiving and sending emergency and non-emergency messages via radio, telephone or computer.  Communicate with other Fire and Police agencies, RIEMA, DEM, 911, hospitals, and other agencies via radio, telephone, and computer systems. Monitor areas of the Public Safety Building, Town Hall, Municipal Office Building, Schools, and other facilities via CCTV system. Perform various miscellaneous clerical duties and handle walk-in complaints and requests from the public.


  • High School Diploma or GED Equivalent
  • Must be able to type a minimum of 20 words per minute
  • Experience with Microsoft Office products preferred
  • Previous public safety dispatch experience preferred

Hearing - Must have sufficient hearing in both ears to perform essential tasks without posing a direct threat to themselves or others. Must pass a hearing test. (pre-employment physical prior to hiring).

Visual acuity - Must pass an eye examination (pre-employment physical prior to hiring). It is recommended that applicants vision meet the following standards.  Visual Field Performance should be 120 degrees in the horizontal meridian combined. Corrected vision should be at least 20/30 when tested using both eyes together. Applicants should be able to distinguish red, green, blue, and yellow. Red or green deficiencies may be acceptable, providing the applicant can correctly discriminate colors via a field test conducted by a licensed health professional.

Mental and/or Physical Ability - Must be able to read and understand written directions, text, numbers, and legal terminology both displayed on computer screen and paper. Be able to learn proper dispatch procedures, including analyzing incoming information to determine the level of resources required and have the ability to prioritize calls. Learn to operate radio, telephone, computer and related equipment operations. Must be able to perform multiple tasks concurrently and maintain a calm, measured demeanor during periods of extreme stress. Must assimilate information and respond quickly to handle a wide variety and large volume of emergency calls. Must establish effective professional working relationships with other Public Safety Dispatchers, Supervisors, Police Officers, Fire Service and EMS personnel, the general public, tow operators, and members of other public safety agencies.

Must be able to hear, understand and orally communicate detailed information accurately and completely, speak clearly and distinctly, and deal courteously, professionally, and firmly with upset callers in order to obtained critical information. Must be able to sit for prolonged periods of time. Employees are occasionally required to walk, stand, and/or move objects of up to 15 pounds. Employees must be able to reach and extend hands in any direction as well as handle, hold, grasp, turn or otherwise work with hands. Must be able to draft written reports and correspondence.


Must be able to work a rotating shift or flexible hours, as assigned. Some shifts may require extended stays at work exceeding 24 hours at one time. Public Safety Dispatchers may be subject to voluntary or mandatory call-back to work while off duty. Duties are performed in an office environment and noise is generally quiet to moderate. The employee will be exposed to situations that could cause mental stress.


  • Must pass a Police Department criminal background investigation, including fingerprinting (prior to hire).
  • Must pass a drug screening test.
  • Must pass a pre-employment physical including hearing test (prior to hire).
  • Must pass an APCO Public Safety Telecommunicator 1 Certification paid for by the town of North Kingstown.
  • Must pass structured training program and on-the-job training program overseen by Fire and Police Department Supervisors.
  • Must show competency and pass a probation period of one hundred eighty (180) working days from the date of employment.
