Firefighter/Paramedic

$61,183.20 - $78,879.32 (Annually)

Plus - $5,350 Paramedic Bonus

General Statement of Duties: 

Participates in combating, extinguishing and preventing fires and the saving of life and property.  Participates in the laying of hose lines, placing of ladders, ventilation of buildings, placing of fire streams and rescuing of persons.  Administers pre-hospital medical care to the sick and injured appropriate with certification as a Paramedic.

Additional Duties: 

Operates communications equipment.  Participates in the general maintenance and cleaning of quarters, apparatus and equipment.  May serve on special duty at public gatherings.  Attends classes in firefighting and continuing education per State mandates.  May drive and operate various apparatus and motor vehicles.  Work requires the performance of hazardous tasks under difficult and unpleasant conditions. Performs other related work as required.

Supervision Received: 

Works under the direct supervision of a Fire Lieutenant or designated supervisor.  At medical emergencies, works with established protocols and by radio or other communication, with the Emergency Room Physician.

Supervision Exercised: 

Usually none, but may be delegated to supervise other firefighters.  May supervise other rescue personnel at medical emergencies pertaining to patient care.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

Considerable ability to acquire and use effectively a variety of information pertaining to firefighting, fire control and fire prevention.  Considerable ability to become proficient in the care and use of fire- fighting equipment.  Good ability to understand and carry out complex written and oral instructions.  Considerable mechanical aptitude.  Considerable ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.  Considerable ability to think quickly and act decisively in emergency situations.  Considerable agility and physical strength to perform prolonged and arduous work under adverse and hazardous conditions.

Qualifications: 

Must be a high school graduate or hold a GED.  Must hold a current Paramedic License/Certification that meets or exceeds the Connecticut State Regulations Candidates must submit a Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) Certificate which is not more than 12 months old. This certificate must be submitted no later than the date of the written examination. Failure to provide this by the written examination date will make you ineligible to participate in the written examination. Applicants must have reached their 18^th birthday and be able to meet the National Fire Protection Association’s 1582 Standard.  Two categories of medical requirements exist:  Category A and Category B.  Category A conditions will preclude an individual from performing firefighting operations.  Category B conditions must be evaluated a case-by-case basis to allow the Fire Department physician to determine if the medical condition would prevent that person from performing firefighting duties.  Must be able to meet and maintain the requirements of OSHA’S standards for Respiratory Protection (29 CFR 1910.134) as amended.  Must possess and maintain a valid motor vehicle operator’s license.
