Firefighter
GENERAL DUTIES
Perform skilled firefighting work in combating, extinguishing, and preventing fires; in rendering medical assistance at medical and other emergency scenes; and in operating and maintaining Fire Department equipment, apparatus, and work environment
SALARY
- Salary earned while attending fire academy - $800 weekly (as of July 2026)
- Base salary earned upon successful academy completion
- $72,000 - Firefighter Grade 3
- $78,000 - Firefighter Grade 2
- $106,000 - Firefighter Grade 1
- $124,000 - Rescue Lieutenant (First promotional opportunity after completion of 4 years of service)
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Must be at least 18 years of age but not more than 34 years of age at time of application.
- 34 year old applicants must not have reached their 35th birthday prior to appointment to the Warwick Fire Department.
- Must be a United States Citizen and furnish a birth certificate or US-INS Qualified for Employment.
- Must possess and furnish a copy of valid driver’s license.
- Must possess a High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) prior to offer of employment.
- Physical Performance Assessment (PPA) certification, (Dated September 2025 or later); administered by the Rhode Island Association of Fire Chiefs. Follow link for further information; https://www.rifirechiefs.com/content/ppatest/(Opens in new window) Or must have passed and been certified by the Candidates Physical Ability Test (CPAT) (September 2025 and later certifications will be accepted). Must have completed prior to offer of employment.
- Must have no felony criminal convictions
- Must be able to obtain Rhode Island Emergency Medical Technician license prior to offer of employment.
Acceptable alternatives:
- Rhode Island AEMT-Cardiac or Paramedic License
- Current National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) Certification in Emergency Medical Technician (EMT); Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT); or Paramedic
TESTING REQUIREMENTS
- 60% Written Examination
- 40% Oral Interview
- The minimum passing score required on both the written examinations and oral interview shall be 70%
- Upon successfully passing written examination, five (5) additional points will be awarded to City of Warwick Residents with proper documentation and an additional five (5) additional points will be awarded for Current / Past Military service with proper documentation.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

- No Smoking & Drug-free agreements
- Successful completion of a minimum 18-week recruit academy
- Rhode Island AEMT-Cardiac License must be obtained within two (2) years of appointment to the
- Warwick Fire Department at applicant’s expense.

- A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required. Not state specific.
- Driving Record
- A Certified copy of your driving record, obtained within 90 days of this application, from the Operator Control Office – Registry of Motor Vehicles of the State in which you reside.
