Examination #2340 - Entry Level Firefighter

The City of Bridgeport is anticipating holding an Entry Level Firefighter Examination in 2016. Applicants must be CPAT certified, be at least 18 years of age, and be a non-smoker in good physical condition. Firefighting requires persons who can work reliably as a team member under very difficult and dangerous conditions. Self-discipline, intelligence, courage, physical strength, stamina and altruism are necessary for a successful career in firefighting. 

APPLICATION FEE:

$50.00 for Bridgeport Residents

$100.00 for Non-Bridgeport Residents 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Diploma or State Equivalency Certificate
  • 18 years old
  • Valid driver’s license with clean driving history
  • U.S. Citizen or authorized to work in the United States
  • Valid 2015/2016 CPAT Certificate issue date: January 1, 2015 or later

A criminal conviction will not necessarily disqualify an applicant from competing in the examination process, but will be considered as it relates to the position of Firefighter, in light of any applicable state or federal law, and will be reviewed for the nature and severity of the conviction, the recency of the conviction and the rehabilitation efforts made by the candidate since conviction.

JOB SUMMARY:

The position of Firefighter will be located at one of our fire stations under the general supervision of the Fire Chief. Firefighters are assigned to shifts and positions within the department by the Fire Chief. Firefighters will perform individually and/or as a member of a firefighting team and will participate in fire suppression activities including firefighting, rescue, emergency medical services, ventilation, forcible entry, salvage and drill ground training sessions on a regular basis to continuously update their skills and knowledge required for effective work performance. Decisions are made with guidance of a supervisor and on an individual level and have a direct effect on life and property. General job functions include firefighting, emergency medical services and continuous training. The average workweek is 42 hours and requires working rotating shifts, holidays and weekends, and varied hours. A probationary working period of one year is required.

SALARY RANGE:

$50,108 – $54,546 – $61,584 – $65,688

Appointments to be made at the entrance salary of $50,108. Advancements in salary are made in accordance with the contract between the City of Bridgeport and Local 834 IAFF, AFL-CIO. EXAMINATION PROCESS:

Applications are required and will be accepted during the application period. In order to submit an application, the applicant MUST possess a valid CPAT certification. Applications from those who do not have a valid, recent (January 1, 2015 or later) CPAT certificate WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.
The City of Bridgeport will likely give both a written test and an oral exam. Passing candidates will also be required to submit to a medical examination, drug screen, background investigation and psychological evaluation, as well as any other requirements the City deems necessary. Residency and Veteran’s Preference points will be awarded to those who request and qualify for such points.
The City of Bridgeport reserves the right to limit the number of candidates invited to each portion of the selection process occurring after the written exam.
