Starting Probation Salary: Part-Time Probation $21.15/hr, Part-Time: $23.45 top hourly pay

The Cromwell Fire Department is looking for certified Firefighter/EMTs to work with a team of experienced professionals that are dedicated to saving lives and protecting property of all residents and visitors to the Town of Cromwell. The Cromwell Fire Department will be accepting applications to create a hiring list for the position of Firefighter/EMT to staff positions on a Part-Time basis. An hourly rate will be offered to cross-trained personnel who meet the minimum requirements stated below. Part-time employees may receive the following benefits:

* Holiday pay and paid Sick Leave for part-time Firefighter/EMTs.

* Ability to SWAP assigned shifts with other qualified Firefighter/EMTs.

* Part-time to Full-time through an internal process when opportunity exists.

 

Successful candidates will be required to complete orientation, a field training program, and a (1) one-year probationary period. Part-time Firefighters/EMT employees are scheduled based on your availability and by seniority in 12 hour shifts. Part-Time Firefighter/EMT employees will be required to work a minimum of 20 hours per week averaged over a 13-week calendar quarter and when available to respond on a call back basis to meet the operational needs of the department within a prescribed amount of time. Firefighter/EMTs may be required to work nights, weekends, and holidays, special details, and may be subject to a holdover if needed. In addition, Firefighter/EMTs may be required to work long hours, during inclement weather, and from time to time in otherwise less than desirable work conditions.

 

 REQUIRED PRE-REQUISITES

• Firefighter II & Hazardous Materials Operations Certification

• Valid State of Connecticut Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Certification

• Valid Connecticut Driver’s License, with ability to obtain “Q” endorsement or CDL A/B.

• Valid Candidate Physical Ability Test certification (Issued March 1, 2024 or later)

Internal Applicants: CPAT at or since time of original hire.

• FEMA ICS 100, 200, 700, 800 (Online Self Study Course)

PREFERRED REQUISITES

• Valid Connecticut Drivers License with Q Endorsement or CDL A or B.

• At least 1 year of experience as a firefighter in an organized fire department.

• At least 1 year of experience as an EMT or higher medical service is preferred.

• Completion of CT Fire Academy Recruit Program or another equivalent municipal firefighter recruit program

 

SELECTION PROCESS

• Completion of a Cromwell Fire District Employee Application.

• Submission of cover letter, expressing your interest in a part-time firefighter/emt position

• Submission of current resume, with your job experience and levels of fire/ems training.

• Submission of Valid CT Drivers License

• Submission of the required Pre-Requisites and any preferred requisites described above.

• Successfully pass a written examination.

• Successfully pass an oral interview / practical skills examination.

• Successfully pass a Chief’s Interview.

• Successfully pass a thorough background check including Background Investigation, Criminal Records Check, Motor Vehicle Records Check.

• Successfully pass a pre-employment physical & drug screening

 

TESTING & HIRING PROCESS

 Testing will first consist of a written exam.  The written test will be weighted at 50% and any applicable points as described below will be added to your score. You will need a passing score of 70% or higher on the written exam to advance to the oral interview / practical skills examination. The oral interview / practical skills examination is the next phase of testing and will also be weighted at 50%. Any applicable points as described below will be added to your score. You will need a passing score of 70% or higher on the oral interview / practical skills examination to continue in the process. With a minimum score of 70% passing on both portions, your scores will be averaged to determine your overall score and testing process ranking. The Rule of 3 will be utilized when making a hiring selection from the hiring list. Prior to hiring, the top 3 candidates will move on to the Chief’s Interview. One candidate will be selected and given a conditional job offer for an available position and the other two will remain on the hiring list in their respective ranking order. If more than one position is available, selection will continue using the rule of 3 as described above.  

 

Extra points will be added to the written and oral scores based on residency in Cromwell 2pts, military service 2pts, active continuous volunteer or part-time service with Cromwell Fire Department, using the Internal Applicant Point Chart below.

Residency – 2 points  (points awarded for Cromwell residency with proof)

Military – 2 points (Active service or proof with DD 214)

Internal:  Years of volunteer service             0-1 year     1 point

                                                                        1-2 years    2 points

                                                                        2-3 years    3 points

                                                                        3-4 years    4 points

                                                                        4-5+ years    5 points

** To receive internal points, the Cromwell Fire Department Volunteer must currently be active, in good standing, and have continuous service to the Cromwell Fire Department as a Volunteer Firefighter/EMT.

 Interested applicants must submit all required information and documentation prior to application deadline, via FirefighterApp.com, and all pre-requisites at time of application or by May 1, 2025.

Upon review of your application packet and pre-requisite certifications you will be contacted to sit for a written test.

For those that qualify, the written test will be held at 8:30am on April 23, 2025 at the Cromwell Fire Department, Chief’s Office, 105 Coles Road, Cromwell, CT.

For those that pass the written test, the tentative date for oral interview / practical skills examination will be May 1, 2025.
