WORKING HOURS:               Full-time; Rotating Schedule (24 hours on/72 hours off)

UNION:                                   IAFF, Local 1219, AFL-CIO                                   

RATE OF PAY:                       $23.12 per hour

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:  The Naugatuck Fire Department is accepting applications to develop a hiring list for future dispatcher openings. The successful candidate will be responsible for receiving and dispatching emergency and administrative messages using the radio, telephone or other communication systems. This position dispatches fire department equipment and manpower to emergency/routine incidents as well as resources outlined in department procedures. This position maintains written records, such as log books, journals and incident records; maintains inventory of portable radios and related equipment. Dispatcher answers a variety of routine questions and refers questions to the proper fire department individual, outside department, or agency. Dispatcher will use a computer workstation to look up property information, department pre-incident plans, hazardous materials information, and/or other information. Monitor fire alarms directly tied to the fire department. Answers and asks a variety of questions in order to determine the nature and extent of an emergency; operation of the communication console with a high degree of accuracy and attentiveness due to the critical nature of emergency communications. Contact other organizations or jurisdictions, as required. The position will participate in all phases of training necessary to acquire the knowledge and skills required of the position.

REPORTS TO:  Lieutenant, Shift Captain, Second Assistant Chief, Deputy Fire Chief, Fire Chief

QUALIFICATIONS – KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: A qualified candidate will possess at least a High School Diploma or GED. One (1) year as public safety dispatcher is required.  Basic computer operating skills, including but not limited to: word processing and paging programs, input and retrieve information from spreadsheets and databases. Ability to speak a second language is desirable. Candidates should have, or be able to obtain, State of Connecticut certification as a public safety tele-communicator.  Applicants must have valid CT driver’s license.
