About the South Fire District:
The South Fire District provides fire suppression, emergency medical services, hazardous materials response, dive rescue, marine rescue, confined space and other rescue services to the southern half of the City of Middletown. The department currently consists of 35+ career firefighters. Fire headquarters, located at 445 Randolph Road, facilitates administrative offices including fire inspectors/investigators.
The South Fire District serves a diverse community of approximately 15,000 residents and covers 25 square miles of the City of Middletown.
Total alarms responded to are typically around 2,000+ per year.
SOUTH FIRE DISTRICT
ENTRY LEVEL FIREFIGHTER
- Written Exam: Saturday, January 10, 2026.
- Oral Exam: Week of January 12, 2026
Minimum Qualifications
All minimum qualifications must be fulfilled upon conditional offer of employment.
- Eighteen (18) years of age
- High School Diploma or GED
- Valid CT driver’s license at the time of a conditional job offer, Class B or 2-Q preferred
- NREMT of State of CT EMT
- Successful non-certified candidates must successfully complete the Connecticut Fire Academy Recruit Firefighter Program. For more information on this program, visit Recruit Firefighter Program (ct.gov).
SALARY RANGE: $50,398.57 - $81,672.11 (salary to increase pending contract settlement)

CPAT TEST REQUIRED
Valid CPAT required for all applicants upon conditional offer of employment.

EMT-BASIC CERTIFICATION REQUIRED
Valid EMT Certification required for all applicants upon conditional offer of employment.
State of Connecticut EMT-Basic OR National Registry EMT-Basic are acceptable.
Character Requirements:
Applicant must meet the highest legal and ethical standards. Applicant will undergo a rigorous background investigation before any offer of employment is made. An applicant may be disqualified for poor employment history, recent use of illegal drugs, or previously undetected criminal activity.
Examinations:
Written Exam:
- Applicants will be subject to a written exam, consisting of 100 multiple choice questions. The written exam is scheduled for Saturday, January 10, 2026.
Oral Exam:
- The applicants with the 20 highest scores on the written exam will be invited to participate in an oral interview process the week of January 12, 2026.
Chief's Interview:
- The applicants with the 10 highest aggregate scores from the written exam and oral interview will be invited to participate in a chief's interview.
Applicants must pass a thorough medical examination which will include drug and alcohol testing, and a criminal background check at the time of a conditional offer of employment.
