JOB DESCRIPTION

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION:

The purpose of the Junior Member is to gain knowledge and understanding of the Fire and EMS operations of the Town of Coventry Fire & EMS Department.  This position is intended for youths aged 14-17 as an introductory role to the Fire & EMS Service. The major emphasis of this position shall be learning the organization and operation of the Town of Coventry Fire & EMS Department.  Junior Members must live in Coventry, CT.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

  • Junior Members duties may be modified due to age and current CT guidelines for Cadet, Explorer, and Jr. Members of a Fire and Emergency Services Organization.
  • To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
  • Have an understanding of the department’s policies and procedures.
  • Conduct periodic inspection of uniforms, gear and equipment
  • Attend required training and department meetings
  • Interact effectively, professionally and tactfully with all participating agencies and the general public.
  • Respond to emergency and non-emergency calls for service.
  • Perform on-scene duties at the request of the Officer in charge in compliance with the department’s SOGs and directives, including: acting as the primary caregiver for medical patients, first aid, crowd control, and traffic control.
  • Complete required reports (including patient care reports), including documentation entered into department’s computerized records management system with speed and accuracy.
  • Other duties as assigned by superior officers.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Have a general knowledge of fire & emergency medical service principles, practices, apparatus and equipment.
  • Must possess the ability to understand and carry out written and verbal instructions.
  • Must possess the ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with co-workers and function as a team leader.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing the duties of the job, the member is regularly required to use hands to handle or feel objects, tools or controls and reach with hands and arms. The member is regularly required to stand; walk; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; and taste or smell. The member must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

SPECIAL CONSIDERATION: Certain tasks within this job may require the use of a respirator. Such tasks may require sufficient pulmonary and respiratory health to use a respirator and may preclude full beards or other obstructions preventing a positive facial fit for half-face or full-face respirators.

MENTAL DEMANDS:

While performing the duties of this position, the member will be regularly required to use written and oral communication skills; read and interpret data, information and documents; analyze and solve problems; use math and mathematical reasoning; observe and interpret situations; learn and apply new information or skills; The exposure to death, emotional stress, patients with contagious diseases and terminal illnesses can be expected and interact with department members, other organizations and the public.

EXAMPLES OF PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Operate both as a member of a team and independently at incidents of uncertain duration.
  • Spend extended periods of time exposed to outdoor elements.
  • Tolerate extreme fluctuations in temperature and humidity while performing duties. Must perform physically demanding work in atmospheres that range in temperature (from below freezing to over 400 degrees F) and humidity (ranging from very low up to 100%) while wearing equipment that significantly impairs body-cooling mechanisms.
  • Work in wet, icy or muddy areas and perform a variety of tasks on slippery, hazardous surfaces such as on rooftops or from ladders.
  • Work in areas where sustaining traumatic or thermal injuries is possible.
  • Face exposure to carcinogenic dusts such as asbestos, toxic substances such as hydrogen cyanide, acids, carbon monoxide, or organic solvents either through inhalation or skin contact.
  • Wear personal protective equipment that weighs approximately 50 pounds while performing firefighting tasks.
  • Perform physically demanding work while wearing positive pressure breathing equipment with 1.5 inches of water column resistance to exhalation at a flow of 40 liters per minute.
  • Perform tasks during life-threatening emergencies.
  • Work for long periods of time, requiring sustained physical activity and intense concentration.
  • Make rapid transitions from rest to near maximal exertion without warm-up periods.
  • Use manual and power tools in the performance of duties.
  • Rely on senses of sight, hearing, smell, and touch to determine the nature of an emergency, maintain personal safety, and make critical decisions in confused, chaotic, and potentially life-threatening environments for the duration of an operation.
  • Work at a steady pace and to complete assignments within an appropriate schedule.
  • Adhere to agency standards of neatness and cleanliness.
  • Drive a vehicle or an emergency vehicle in a safe manner.
  • Effectively coordinate sensory experiences and motor activity.
  • Tolerate heights, including climbing ladders in excess of 100 feet in length based on a ladder truck.
  • Operate in environments of high noise, poor visibility, limited mobility, at heights, and in enclosed or confined spaces.

  • Exposures to infectious agents such as hepatitis B or HIV.
  • Face life or death decisions during emergency conditions.
  • Exposed to grotesque sights and smells associated with major trauma and burn victims.
